7 Viral TikTok Makeup Hacks to Try
You should take online beauty advice with a grain of salt. However, some viral beauty hacks are absolute gems. These are the hacks that are legit and worth a shot.
1. Blush placement for a lifted look
Still applying blush to the apples of your cheeks? This TikTok makeup hack is for you. In @isaachalvorsen7’s viral TikTok video, he demonstrates how blush placement can make the face appear more lifted with this placement technique.
You’ll need a clean blush and blush brush for this hack. Instead of applying blush to the apples of your cheeks, bring the placement to the back of the cheekbones. You can even place the product around your temples. This emphasizes the cheekbones instead of making the cheeks look fuller, creating a more sculpted look.

2. Soap brows
There seems to be a new viral brow product or technique every season. As of right now, fluffy and natural-looking brows are in. To achieve this, TikTok beauty gurus recommend the soap brows technique.
While there are soap brow products for this technique, you don’t need anything fancy to do this today — just grab a plain bar of soap and spoolie. In @millieleer’s viral TikTok video, she tries soap brows for the first time.
Simply spray your bar soap or soap brows product with some water and rub the spoolie directly on it to create a paste. This acts like a gel for your brow hairs. While the product is still wet, apply it to the brows and use the spoolie to brush them in the direction you want. Allow the product to dry, and enjoy your fluffy and natural-looking brows that will stay put all day.

3. Set your moisturizer with powder and spray before makeup
How you prep your skin heavily affects how your makeup application will turn out. If you want a flawless base, this requires some preparation. TikTok user @jaridadoesntexist’s video went viral for this out-of-the-box makeup hack that many people now swear by.
To try this hack, you will need your favorite moisturizer, setting powder, setting spray, and foundation. Apply your moisturizer as you normally would, then set it with both setting powder and spray. Allow it to dry completely before applying your foundation as usual. TikTok users have given their positive feedback on this makeup hack, which claims to yield crease-free makeup that stays all day.

4. Face lift with concealer
For the last several years, the go-to concealer method was the triangle shape. This emphasizes the lowest part of the cheek, which does the opposite of achieving that lifted look. Instead, less is more. Apply a small amount of concealer in the inner part of the under eye and side of the nose for contour. Avoid putting too much concealer where you may have fine lines, as this can cause creasing.
Then, apply concealer to the outer part of the under eye in an upwards motion like a winged liner. This will act like a highlighter to lift that area of the face. Professional makeup artist @scortezzbeauty demonstrates this beautifully.

5. Bat wing eyeliner for hooded eyes
If you have hooded eyes, you know the struggle of eyeshadow that creases and eyeliner that ends up getting folded in the crease of the eye. Pro MUA @scortezzbeauty’s viral video offers a unique solution — eyeliner that resembles a bat wing for hooded eyes.
When looking straight on, the eyeliner looks like any regular liner application. When the eyes are closed, you can see the distinct bat wing shape. Since people with hooded eyelids have a thicker “hood” that covers most of the eyelid, this eyeliner application method can make a huge difference.

6. Apply mascara to just the tips of your eyelashes
Ever wondered how you can get longer eyelashes with less clumping? TikToker @sarajadeee’s viral video offers a simple solution. Instead of applying mascara to the base of your eyelashes, focus the application on just the tips.
She also recommends curling your eyelashes twice, using a waterproof mascara, and applying two coats of mascara. According to Sara and others who have tried this technique, your lashes will stay curled for longer, have fewer clumps, and have an overall longer appearance.

7. Cover acne with serum, primer, and pot concealer
A list of TikTok makeup hacks would not be complete without mentioning the up-and-coming @mikaylanogueira and her viral concealer hack. According to Mikayla, you will need three products in this order: a sticky hyaluronic acid serum, a sticky primer, and a pot concealer.
Once you’ve applied the serum and primer, use a brush to apply the pot concealer. The trick is to cover all acne like a spackle and let it sit for two minutes. Then, apply your foundation over the dried concealer. Mikayla claims this will cover acne as well as texture for flawless-looking skin.

5 TikTok Makeup Hacks to Avoid
Some beauty tips go viral not because they are effective and life-changing but because they are so outlandish. These TikTok makeup hacks went viral because they are so extreme, but they are not practical for everyday application.
1. Excessive foundation
This TikTok hack is not for those who love a natural makeup look. It is very full coverage. Credit goes to @meredithduxbury, who went viral for this wild makeup hack involving foundation. Meredith applies copious amounts of foundation to her foundation and rubs it in with her hands. The finished look always looks flawless, but keep in mind that Meredith likely uses professional lighting and camera equipment.
While this makeup look may work for the camera, it does not hold up in real life. Many have tried Meredith’s viral foundation hack and found that it is just too heavy for daily wear. Plus, this uses up a lot of product, so your foundation bottle won’t last as long.
2. Contouring around the lips
Applying bronzer, contour, blush, highlighter, and concealer before foundation is a makeup technique that many TikTok beauty gurus are trying and enjoying right now. However, @kyliekillzzzz’s viral contour video does not live up to its expectation. Kylie applies cream contour around and on the lips — like a donut.
Many who have tried this technique have compared the final look to a five o’clock shadow around the mouth. Pass on the cream lip contour, but do try contouring the forehead, cheeks, and jawline.
3. Sellma blush technique
Blush is all the rage for summer. Many are applying blush to the forehead, nose, and cheeks for a sunkissed look. However, too much of anything can be a bad thing, including blush. The viral video by TikTok user @lenkalul shows her trying what is called the Sellma blush technique, which was started by another user @SellmaKasumoviq.
To try this technique, apply blush liberally to the cheeks, temples, forehead, and nose. You can use red lipstick in place of blush as well. Yes, your face will look like a strawberry. Apply contour, concealer, and foundation next — in that order — and then blend everything together. While some have had success with this technique, most have simply ended up with a face full of stubborn lipstick.
4. Significantly overlining the lips
Overlined lips have been a beauty trend since the Kylie Jenner lip kit era. TikTok user @rxthism took this to a whole new level by significantly overlining her lips to the point where they look twice as big.
While this looks believable on camera, it does not hold up in person. If you want to line your lips before applying lipstick, stick to the natural curve of your lips or overline ever so slightly. Overlining too much becomes very noticeable, especially from the side view.
5. Applying concealer over the brows
To do your brows before or after your complexion? That is the question. When you do your brows before your makeup, applying foundation and concealer around them is a challenge. The brow hack by @barbbeautyyy offers a solution: apply concealer directly over the entire brow to create a seamless transition to the rest of your makeup.
Unfortunately, this one is too good to be true. Applying concealer to the brows not only uses a lot of product (and concealers are already small to begin with), the product gets clumpy in your brow hairs. This makes it difficult to shape them with a spoolie or fill them with a brow pencil.
Makeup Tips That’ll Make Your Life 100 Times Easier
It has taken me years to learn my face shape, what colors flatter me, how much to apply, and how to apply it so that it looks beautiful and natural. But, I think I’ve finally perfected my morning routine!
You don’t have to spend hours doing it, either. Once you have the know-how, you’ll see just how much makeup can accentuate your best features and hide those that aren’t as favorable. Here are a few makeup tips and tricks that you’ll wish you had known a long, long time ago!
Makeup Tips: 1. Apply your foundation before concealer
Hot tip: The easiest way to level up your makeup routine is to try applying your foundation before concealer. Think about it: Starting with a layer of foundation will help minimize any redness or discoloration—almost like you’re creating a smooth base for the rest of your products. You can then go in with your concealer to spot treat any zits or remaining redness, and you’ll end up using way less product in the process. Another plus? Foundation before concealer is a genius fix for preventing caking and creasing.
Makeup Tips: 2. Maintain your eyebrows with a spoolie brush
On busy days when I don’t have time to fill in my eyebrows, I like to do the next best thing: quickly comb up my arches with a spoolie brush (aka those little mascara wands). And even when I do have time for powders, gels, and pencils, I still like to prep my brows with my spoolie—it takes 10 seconds max, and it’s an easy way to make sure each of my brow hairs are in the right spot before I go in with my products. Pro makeup tip: You can buy spoolie brushes in bulk for v cheap (I like the Cuttte Disposable Mascara Brushes) or go for something reusable (I’m a fan of Uoma Beauty’s Brow-Fro Baby Hair, which also has a precision pencil on one end).
Makeup Tips: 3. Exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick
Okay, you know when you apply lipstick and it doesn’t go on smooth? Try prepping your lips with a gentle lip scrub (I like the Beauty Bakerie Sugar Lip Scrub or the KNC Beauty Lip Scrub) —the physical exfoliation will help buff away any dry skin sitting on top of your lips, leaving you with a smoother, softer canvas for your products. One thing to keep in mind: Lip scrubs should only be used once a week max—anything more and you’ll risk irritation (aka the opposite vibe you’re going for).
Makeup Tips: 4. Don’t sleep on blush
It might seem like an obvious step in your makeup routine, but IMO, blush is the most underrated product. A couple sweeps of cream or powder blush along the high points of your cheeks will give your entire look a brighter, warmer finish with pure ease. “I use blush on all my clients—it gives the skin that fresh and rejuvenated look and it adds the perfect amount of depth to the face,” makeup artist Lakeisha Dale has told Cosmo. And, no, that doesn’t mean you need to pick a bright-pink blush or anything like that—try going for something soft and glowy, like one of the picks below.
Makeup Tips: 5. Melt your pencil liner to help it glide
Fact: Creamy makeup products blend better when they’re warmed up. So if your kohl eyeliner pencil skips or tugs on your eyelid or takes multiple coats for a decent color payoff, melt it down slightly before you start lining. To do so, hold the tip of your kohl liner under the flame of a lighter for a second or until it gets tacky, let it cool slightly (swatch it on your hand to make sure it’s not too hot or melted), then watch the consistency change right before your eyes.
Makeup Tips: 6. Make your eyeshadow pop with white eyeliner
To make a sheer or less pigmented eyeshadow appear more vibrant on your eyelid, blend a white eyeliner pencil over your entire eyelid first. Then, put your eyeshadow right on top. The opaque coverage of the white liner will intensify any eyeshadow shade and make it pop.
Makeup Tips: 7. Outline your cat eye
If you’re struggling with nailing your winged eyeliner look (also, hi, same, I feel you), try drawing the outline of the shape first and then filling it in. Extend a line beyond your lower lash line to create the bottom of your cat eye first. Then, decide on the thickness you want for your wing, and trace the top line from the end point of your flick to your upper lash line. Once you have the shape mapped out on both sides and everything looks symmetrical, fill in the open space.
Makeup Tips: 8. Use a spoon as a stencil for winged liner
If freehand drawing your cat eye just isn’t gonna happen for you, grab a spoon and use it as a stencil. Holding the stem of a spoon against the outer corner of your eye, use a liquid eyeliner to draw a straight line as the first step for your cat eye. Then, flip the spoon so it’s hugging your eyelid, and use the rounded outer edge to create a perfectly curved winged effect.
Makeup Tips: 9. Hack a smoky eye with a hashtag
A smoky eye can go from sultry to sloppy real fast if you don’t know what you’re doing. To keep it simple, use a creamy eyeliner to draw a slanted hashtag symbol on the outer third of your eyelid, then blend it out with the sponge or a smudging brush. This will not only ensure that both eyes are symmetrical, but also prevent you from getting a little too crazy with the eyeliner.
Makeup Tips: 10. Use a spoon as a mascara shield
Nothing is more annoying than making your eyeshadow look perfect, and then swiping on mascara and ruining the whole thing with smudges. The fix? Hold a spoon so it’s hugging your eyelid, then apply your mascara like you normally would. As you sweep the mascara wand against your lashes and the back of the spoon, the residue will coat the back of the utensil rather than your skin. Genius.
Makeup Tips: 11. Revive mascara with saline solution
Word of advice: Only use a tube of mascara for three months, max. Beyond that point, it can collect bacteria and lead to eye infections and other unfortunate things you wouldn’t want to search on Google Images. But if your mascara annoyingly dries up within those first three months, add a couple drops of saline solution into the flaky formula to get it back to its smooth consistency.
Makeup Tips: 12. Heat your eyelash curler with a hair dryer
DIY your own heated lash curler by blowing hot air on your eyelash curler. The added heat will help your lashes curl faster and keep the shape for longer. Just hit your lash curler with a blow dryer until it heats up, wait until it cools slightly but is still warm (test it on the inside of your arm so you don’t burn your eyelid), then clamp down on your lashes to curl them.
Makeup Tips: 13. Plump your lashes with translucent powder
Dust some translucent setting powder on your lashes between coats of mascara to plump up your lashes. The translucent powder helps grip the mascara in between coats, leaving you with fuller, more voluminous lashes.
Makeup Tips: 14. Apply eyelash glue with a bobby pin
If you always make a mess with eyelash glue and end up with clumpy-looking fake lashes, try this makeup tip: Use the tip of a clean bobby pin to carefully apply a few dots of glue to the lash band and disperse it evenly. Wait a few seconds or until the glue is tacky and then pop the lashes on.
Makeup Tips: 15. Set your lip color with a tissue and powder
For lip color that lasts hours, just swipe on your shade, lay a tissue over your mouth, then dust translucent powder over the top to set the color from budging or bleeding. This process may seem ~extra~, but the payoff is 100 percent worth it. The translucent powder alone could alter your lip shade, but using the tissue as a shield will protect it from lightening or dulling.
Makeup Tips: 16. Mix your own lip color with petroleum jelly
If you have an eyeshadow that you love so much and also want to wear as a lip shade, mix the loose pigments with a little bit of petroleum jelly (Aquaphor or Vaseline works fine) in a spoon and just swipe it onto your lips. Boom. Your own, custom lip gloss. Best makeup tip ever.
Makeup Tips: 17. Define your Cupid’s bow with an “x”
The easiest and quickest way to define your cupid’s bow is to take a lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick and create an “X” that lines up with your natural lip line. Then fill in the bottom three sections of the “X” with lipstick and continue applying it as you normally would to complete your look.
Makeup Tips: 18. Conceal under your eyes with a triangle shape
If you want to really brighten your under-eye area, stop dotting on your concealer and try applying it in a triangular shape. Draw the base of the triangle directly under your lash line and the tip pointing toward the apple of your cheek. This helps fully conceal any redness and shadows to create the illusion of brighter under eyes.
Makeup Tips: 19. Use a brush handle as a contour guide
Everyone’s face is shaped differently, so where your BFF might be doing her contour may not be the best place for you to do yours. To tell where you should be dusting on your bronzer or contour powder, roll a pencil, pen, or makeup brush handle right below your cheekbone (directly in the pocket underneath the actual bone) to find the right angle for your face. Once you’ve found the correct placement, dust some bronzer right below it with a contouring brush, then blend the color out to soften it.
Makeup Tips: 20. Map your contours with a brow pencil
Don’t have a cream contour stick? No problem. After you’ve applied your foundation, mark the areas you want to contour—the hollows under your cheekbones, your temples, along your hairline, jawline, the sides of your nose, the tip of the nose, and the crease of your eyes—with a deeply colored brow gel pencil. Yep, you read that right. Brow gel pencils are really concentrated, yet very smudge-able, which makes them perfect for contouring.
Makeup Tips: 21. Blot your oil with a clean toilet seat cover
Okay, yes, this sounds gross, but hear me out! Both blotting papers and toilet seat covers are made out of similar materials and will help soak up the excess oil on your skin. So, if you’re in a pinch and headed to the bathroom to freshen up anyway, grab one of these covers and pat it over your T-zone to decrease any excess oil on your face.

Whether you’re looking to fix common makeup problems like creasing, smudging, or fading, or you just want to change up your look, here are the best makeup hacks that you need to try ASAP.
Makeup Hacks: 1. Powder your lashes.
The key to fluffier and fuller lashes? A little translucent powder. After your first coat of mascara, dust your lashes with a gentle coat of loose powder — this will add volume to your eyelashes by making them look thicker. Add a second coat of mascara to cover the dustiness, and you’ll see the difference for yourself.
Makeup Hacks: 2. Apply concealer in a triangle.
Instead of dotting concealer under your eyes, apply in un upside down triangle to brighten any dark circles and draw attention up to your pupils.
Makeup Hacks: 3. Learn how to apply eyeliner to complement your eye shape.
Everyone’s eyes are different — so that means everyone’s eyeliner should be drawn on a little bit differently, too. First, figure out your eye shape (hooded eyes, downturned eyes, monolid eyes, or round eyes), then learn the best eyeliner to use and the right way to apply it to make your eyes stand out.
Makeup Hacks: 4. Take your time putting on false eyelashes…
When applying fake eyelashes, don’t rush to apply them after adding the glue. “Wait until lash glue has dried for about 30 to 40 seconds before applying falsies to keep the strip from sliding around and a faster dry-time on lids,” suggests Good Housekeeping editor Jessica Teich.
Makeup Hacks: 5 …and don’t forget to look down.
After you’ve given your glue a minute to dry, hold a mirror below your line of sight as you put on your fake lashes. “Look down into a mirror when applying falsies,” says Teich. “It makes it easier to place the strip close to the lash line.”
Makeup Hacks: 6. Refresh your clumpy mascara.
If your favorite tube of mascara is starting to get a little clumpy, add a few drops of saline solution and swirl your brush around — it will add moisture to the mascara’s formula and extend its shelf life.
Makeup Hacks: 7. Use eyeshadow as eyeliner.
No eyeliner? No problem, your eyeshadow palette can do the trick. “Simply wet an angle brush with water or setting spray. Dip the wet brush into your eyeshadow, then line your eye as you would with traditional liner,” says makeup artist Dana Rae Ashburn-McKissock. “For a smoky look, allow the wet shadow line to dry and then lightly run a Q-tip along your lash line and blend for a softer result.”
Makeup Hacks: 8. Don’t line your entire eye with dark liner.
After you finish applying any kind of eyeliner to your upper lashline, stop there or else your eyes will look smaller. “Avoid rimming your entire eyes in a dark color, unless you’re going for a full-blown smoky eye,” says Ashburn-McKissock. “Covering anything in a dark color is slimming, so you want to keep dark colors on the top and outer corners of the eyes to lift and accentuate.”
Makeup Hacks: 9. Apply nude or white liner to your waterline to widen eyes.
While dark liner on your waterline will close eyes in, white eyeliner has the opposite effect. “Find a liner that is a few shades lighter than your skin tone. Apply the liner to your bottom waterline,” says Ashburn-McKissock. “This will give the illusion of bigger, brighter eyes.”
Makeup Hacks: 10. Use white eyeliner to accentuate your brows.
Hold on to that white eyeliner because you’ll need it for your brows, too. Draw and then blend thin line of white or nude eyeliner directly under your eyebrows — this will dramatically highlight the natural arch of your brows.
Makeup Hacks: 11. Use white eyeliner to accentuate your brows
Hold on to that white eyeliner because you’ll need it for your brows, too. Draw and then blend thin line of white or nude eyeliner directly under your eyebrows — this will dramatically highlight the natural arch of your brows.
Makeup Hacks: 12. Curl eyelashes more than once
If you’re looking for long, full lashes, don’t make the common mistake of just pressing down once with your eyelash curler.
“When curling eyelashes, pulse a few times up the whole length of your lashes for the most natural-looking curl,” says Teich.
Makeup Hacks: 13. Brush your brows into place.
If you’re out of brow gel, try this DIY method to keep even the most unruly brows in place. “Apply a small amount of hair gel or hairspray on to a clean spoolie or toothbrush and brush your brows into place,” says Ashburn-McKissock. Quick and easy!
Makeup Hacks: 14. Highlight your cupid’s bow
Highlighter draws forward certain spots on your face, making them appear larger — and you can use this basic principle to make your lips appear fuller. After applying lipstick, simply dab some highlighter on the cupid’s bow of your lips, and you’ll be able to see the difference right away.
Makeup Hacks: 15. Use lip liner to create the illusion of fuller lips
Lip liner doesn’t just keep your lipstick in place — if you draw just over the natural lines of your lips, you can make your pout appear larger. “Use lip liner to fill in your lips in the same color as your lipstick for the longest-lasting coverage,” says Teich. “You can also overline lips this way.”
Makeup Hacks: 16. Make your own lip stain
Wear your favorite lipstick color without worrying about it smudging or fading by turning it into a lip stain. “Apply your favorite cream or liquid lipstick, and leave it on for a minimum of 10 minutes,” says Ashburn-McKissock. “Then, use a wet cotton round to ‘remove’ it and apply your favorite lip balm after for a hydrated, stained look.”
Makeup Hacks: 17. Use your thumb to keep lipstick off of your teeth
Nobody wants their smile to show off a set of lipstick-stained teeth. To keep your lipstick on your lips, simply pucker up and put your thumb in your mouth, then quickly pull it out. That way, you’ll wipe away any lipstick on the inside of your lips before it makes its way to your teeth.
Makeup Hacks: 18. Set lipstick with translucent powder
This old-school hack has been around since your grandma’s generation. And for good reason — it works. Apply your favorite lipstick as you normally would. After, place a tissue on your lips, and apply translucent powder over the tissue onto your lips. You’ll be left with matte pout that will stay put all night.
Makeup Hacks: 19. Don’t test foundation on your wrists
While it’s certainly easier to swipe some foundation or concealer on your inner arm to see if it matches your skin tone at the store, it’s not that accurate. “Color test foundation and concealer on your face or neck, not your arm or hand,” says Teich. “Your hand is likely a different color from your face, so this is the only way to get an accurate color match!”
Makeup Hacks: 20. DIY your own tinted moisturizer
When you want something lighter for the summer, you don’t have to ditch your foundation — you can turn it into tinted moisturizer. “Use equal parts foundation and moisturizer — apply a penny size amount of each and mix in your palm,” says Ashburn-McKissock. “For a summery, tan glow, add a few drops of gel bronzer. For a glowy, dewy effect, add a few drops of liquid highlighter.”
